Value, Texture and Line - Monochromatic Compositions

This week's Focus on Life prompt is Monochrome.  Color is the single most personally important element in my art work.  Color is what drew me to seed beads in the first place - those pure pixels of color in the form of tiny glass beads.

When you take away color, you're left with value, texture and line.  I found myself looking for these elements every where I went this past week.

In particular, I found myself noticing all the public art work which ignores color completely, focusing on the other design elements.  My favorite I've decided it this window screen on one of the parking garages downtown.  I love the overlapping, concentric circles, like ripples in a pond.

  1. That is an awesome screen. It could be a work of art in and of itself.

  2. That's a window screen?! Wow, you're so right that when you take away color you're left with value, texture, and line. Great understanding of monochromatic.

  3. Very cool interpretation on this week's prompt! I did do a freeform project for tomorrow's hop, but I've been traveling this past week and didn't see a list of participates come through. Hopefully it is still ok that I've joined your challenge!!

  5. A gorgeous find - that's probably what Sally wanted: for us to find these unexpected and special moments of beauty, even without something that defines us so much: colour.

  10. Beautiful, and very deco feeling to me. I love it when you notice public art in your own backyard that you hadn't before. We have this enormous (like 30 feet or so) spider in front of the National Gallery here. Never really thought much of it. Then I got an awesome wedding shot with it in the background and I totally love it

  13. Reminds me a bit of a leaded glass window! All you need to do is add the colour to each 'square'! There are a lot of great wrought iron gates out there!

  17. Your post is great. I love your line "When you take away color, you're left with value, texture and line." So true. It makes us look at things in a different manner. Your shot is wonderful. What a treat to be able to see that each day.
