Kettle's Overboiling, Soup's Definitely on....

Soups on!  Bead Soup that is, courtesy of our fabulous hostess, Lori Anderson who organizes the entire show, pairing beaders from around the world to see what they come up with.  Wondering just how big the Bead Soup party is?  Check out this map that Lori put together.

My partner this time around is the wonderful Tracey Nanstad of A Beadiful Mess.  For a peak at the soup mix she sent, check out my earlier post

Her Lucky Robin Bluebird pendant really gave me the fits, trying to figure out what to do with it.  The bail was too prominent (and pretty) to remove, so I couldn't just bead bezel around it like a cabochon.  But it was too narrow to fit any of the various beaded ropes I came up with.

So I finally broke down and pulled out my favorite book on wirework and sat down with my wire-snips and pliers.

While my wireworking is fairly simple, I don't do it often.  It's outside of my comfort zone, which is supposed to be part and parcel of this challenge.  Yeah.   I had fun figuring out how to wire the flower beads onto the metal knots.

I used Tracey's pendant, clasp and silver circles.  Searching through my stash for coordinating beads, I came across the pressed blue beads, leftovers from Kalmbach's bead soup party last fall.  The red beads are garnets - I started to worry that I wouldn't have enough because less than half of them fit onto my wire.

While I wrestled with what to do with the Robin Bluebird pendant, I noticed that the stone cabochon Tracey sent was perfectly shaped for a fish body.   If you've been following my blog at all lately, you know I'm working with a fish theme this year.

I thought about making a grand daddy of a Fancy Fish.  Instead, I decided to draw a cartoony-style fish with beads.  As I worked, it occurred to me that the way I planned for it to hang, people would only ever see one side of the fish at a time.  So I decided to create a split personality fish, with a different look on either side.  So it's like having two pendants in one.  I made sure that the necklace worked worn either direction as well.

What started out as a way to pass the time while I waited for inspiration to strike took on a life of it's own:

The fish hangs from a felted, beaded bead 'float' that I made.  For the supporting necklace, I wanted to carry on the ocean theme, without becoming too busy, especially since the necklace is quite long.  I stitched a couple of my standard fish bodies, but decided not to add any other identifying details other than a little bead fringe to hint at tails.  For the clasp, I used one of Tracey's textured copper discs, then made a 'fish hook' closure.

While figuring out the components for my Fresh Catch of the Day, I also stitched a couple of beaded beads and used brick stitch to create several medallions.

By skipping every other bead when adding the fire-polished beads around the outer edge, I came up with a design that reminded me of a ship's helm wheel.   But they never did quite fit into the design.  I turned two of them into a pair of earrings for now.  All three are likely to get used in something else in the future.

So that's what I came up with working from Tracey's Bead Soup.  Now it's time to see what Tracey made with mine.  And to check out what everyone else has made as well.

Lori has a complete list of participants on her blog.

Tracey Nanstad - Beadweaver and Photographer Extraordinare

I'd like to take a moment to introduce Tracey Nanstad of A Beadiful Mess.  Besides having a really cool name for her blog, Tracey is an extraordinary nature photographer and an accomplished beader.  Better yet, she's my Bead Soup partner this time around.  Yep, I couldn't resist the siren call of Lori Anderson's Bead Soup party and came running to sign up once again.

In case you're not familiar with the Bead Soup Party, Lori pairs beaders from around the world.  Each set of partners then exchange special packages, containing a focal bead/pendant, a clasp and any other little beady goodies they want to stick in the package.  You can see the lovely package Tracey sent me above left, including the organizing tray and vials!  And a roll of wire - looks like I have some wire working in my future.

Here's a closeup of some of the lovely goodies.  The Bluebird focal is her original design.  The 13 is a reference to this year - I had to ask then felt really silly once I heard the answer.

With both silver and bronze components, I could go in so many directions.  Need to make some decisions soon and get stitching, because our reveal is April 6th.  That's coming up fast, now!

But before I let you go, here are a few examples of Tracey's work to support my earlier claims.  Tracey's nature photography:

Aren't they gorgeous?  I just chose two of my favorites, but her blog is filled with her amazing photography.

Now it's time for me to start cooking!

Rays of Sunshine on a Cloudy Monday

I've been under the weather the past few days and running on fumes.  My to-do list is about a mile long and is all I seem to dream of at night right now.  But I've had several huge rays of sunshine recently, including two packages in the mail.  So I thought I'd share.

The Art Bead Love Tour package arrived on Friday.  This chain is far longer than I had realized from pictures and there are so many lovely art beads.  Every time I look, I see another lovely I hadn't noticed before.  I'm simply oohing and aahhing over all the beads right now - will make some decisions of what I'm taking off and adding on by the end of the week.  I'll post the drawing for it's next stop then, too.

And then on Saturday I received a surprise package from Kalmbach Books.  I'd forgotten that I'd signed up to participate in their Bead Soup Party to celebrate the upcoming release of Lori Anderson's book Bead Soup.

To make it more fun, the Bead Soup mix is from Beauty and the Bead, a sort of local beading store from Bellingham up near the border.

Isn't that owl fun?  He sure makes me smile.  Now just have to figure out where he belongs in time for the November 2nd reveal.

And today, I received an email from Karin Slaton of Backstory Beads saying she'd awarded my blog the One Lovely Blog Award.  Thank you Karin!  You truly did make my day.

As you've probably guessed by this point, I'm skipping the design post this week - just haven't been able to finish it up to my satisfaction.  But I'll be back with that next Monday.  Promise.

The Briny Blue Bead Soup

Wrack and Ruin, freeform beaded necklace & earrings by Karen Williams
Wrack and Ruin, freeform beadwoven necklace & earrings
This year's Bead Soup took a number of twists and turns before I finally hit on the right track.  I thought I was going for polished at first.

But the wonderful lines and striations in the stone Judy had sent called out for something more organic and freeform.  And who am I to resist that call?  I have no willpower where that's concerned.

So here's Wrack and Ruin, so named because I kept telling myself stories of buried pirate treasure as I worked.

closeup of Wrack and Ruin, freeform beaded necklace & earrings by Karen Williams
closeup so you can really see the stone

The bead strands reminded me of kelp or seaweed, of tarnished bronze and deep sea water.  So even though I hadn't intended a sea piece, that's how it turned out.  I should just admit by now that all of my Bead Soup projects somehow relate back to the sea.  The briny soup from whence their inspiration came.

I don't normally use props in my photography, but the driftwood was just to perfect not to use it for a photo!

Oh, and Judy checked on the stone for me.  Turns out it's dyed Jasper.  I should have known - I seem to have a love affair with Jasper, even when I don't know it!

Be sure to check out what Judy Riley of Three Red Beads made with the beads I sent her, and all the other fantastic Bead Soup creations.  And thanks again to Lori, our wonderful hostess, head chef and bead wrangler!

Work in Progress Wednesday - Bead Soup Teaser

This Saturday's the final Bead Soup reveal of the summer.  I'm working with the wonderful collection of beads sent to me by my partner Judy Riley

Thought I'd do something a little different and show you where it is right at this very minute.  Currently, it reminds me of a tangled octopus.  What do you think?

Good news is I have two more days to work on it!  Curious how it's going to turn out?  Check back on Saturday to see.

Gotta go now - time for more stitching!

The Ingredients for Bead Soup

Bead Soup package from Judy Riley
Have ingredients, time to start working on the recipe
I absolutely adore receiving packages in the mail!  And yesterday's package from my Bead Soup partner Judy Riley was one of the best!

I loved the way she packaged it - all done up in a bright summery party bag.  It even matched my summer table cloth!  And inside what did I find but over a half dozen individually wrapped packages.  The little kid in my scrambled forward and began tearing into the little guys.  It was a feeding frenzy at my house.  Luckily no one was there to see me as paper went flying and I chortled and crowed with each package I unwrapped.

So pretty!  You absolutely rock Judy!  Thank you!  Isn't that stone focal gorgeous?  I love the deep blues, and how they're offset by the cream and red/browns.

This is going to be so much fun!  Now I have a little over a month to come up with something (and to finish out several extant projects as well).

Lori Anderson is giving this Bead Soup mix away to one lucky person
In the meantime, Lori Anderson, our amazing Bead Soup hostess, has posted a giveaway to her blog.  The thing is, the giveaway is actually FIVE separate give-aways rolled into one.  First there's this lovely Bead Soup mix, with items from her stash and donated by several other amazing artists.

Four more give-aways from Lori Anderson
Four more give-aways from Lori Anderson
Then she's giving away copies of her two books - her upcoming book on Bead Soup published by Kalmbach Books, and her ebook on the art and craft of blogging, Follow the Path.  Lori's is one of my favorite blogs, with it's mix of humor, beads, and peaks into her life, mind and heart.  I know that there's a lot I could learn from her to improve my own blog and will definitely be picking up a copy of her ebook if I don't happen to win it on Friday. She's also giving away a Bead Soup tote bag and a Mystery Soup of her own creation.

The drawing's this Friday, July 13th.  Hop on over to her blog if you'd like a chance to win.

My Bead Soup Co-Chef

Lori Anderson's Bead Soup Blog Party: Our Reveal Date is August 25th
It's that time again.  Earlier this month I signed up for my third Bead Soup party.  For those of you just joining in, two to three times a year Lori over at Pretty Things, our hostess with the mostess, pairs participants from all over the world to participate in this challenge.  Then each pair exchanges a package of beads which we then must use to create a new piece.  The goal is to work outside your comfort zone with components you did not choose for yourself.  And to share in the fun of watching others do the same.

This time around, I am fortunate enough to be paired with Judy Riley of Three Red Beads.  Judy's work has a wonderful, organic nature that appeals to me greatly, inspired as it is by the natural world.  A woman after my own heart!

Mystery by Judy Riley with her paper beads
Mystery by Judy Riley with her paper beads
Absent from the designing and blogging community while she worked on her Masters degree, Judy's now back and ready to roll.

Doing a little searching on her blog, I found this lovely piece at right.  Inspired by the song Mystery by the Indigo Girls, it includes her handmade paper beads; blue for the moon clouded, red for the sun, and yellow for the colors of summer.

When I asked how she'd gotten into beading, she replied, "I started out when I was young doing a lot of crafts like many other people, found and loved beads and have worked with them since."  Sound familiar?  It's interesting how for so many of us, an early introduction to crafts by a friend or family member made all the difference.

Now we're both waiting (impatiently at least on my part) to receive our Bead Soup ingredients.  While we're not supposed to show what we've sent until our partner receives her package, we're encouraged to share teasers.  Just to whet the appetite you see.

I fear that my teaser shows a bit more than it's supposed to, but I had so much fun working with my new filters and photo frames from Photoshop Express, I just had to share.  Don't look too closely Judy!  :)

In previous parties, I was paired with the amazing JJ Jacobs (an extremely talented abstract painter as well as glass worker and now one of my favorite online friends) and the lovely Kimberly Roberts.  If you're curious what I made back then, I suggest:

Stitch Until Done: my collaborative effort using JJ's lampwork beads.

A Little Underdone: a totally different look for my work, inspired entirely by Kimberly's fused glass focal.

A Month and a Day:  When I finally finished the piece (story of my life - at least that time I could blame it partially on a hurricane!)

Working with both artists really made me stretch, finding ways to stay true to both of our artistic visions.  And that I think, sums up one of the major reasons I'm back yet again, for yet another cup of soup.

Lots of Possibilities for January

The new year is positively brimming with opportunities, including an earring challenge and the next Bead Soup Party.

Earring Challenge
The idea here is to make a new pair of earrings every day for an entire month. That's 31 different designs which will definitely be a challenge! Beading Daily has a Bead-Along page with a gallery especially for this, but I'll be chronicling my work on my blog as well.

My plan is to upload a photo of each day's design to Facebook and Twitter, and post weekly updates on my progress along with links to friends' blogs who are doing the same. If you're interested in joining in, let me know so I can be sure to include you in my blog rolls. I'd love to have enough people to have a blog hop celebration at the end! JJ over at Coming Abstractions has suggested an earring exchange as well, so I'll organize towards the middle of next month.

Almost Time for Bead Soup
Sign-ups for the next Bead Soup Blog Party are just around the corner, January 7-9th. I almost hesitate to share the dates, because if too many people sign-up, then Lori's going to choose participants by lottery.

Lori carefully pairs all of the participants, and then the partners swap 'bead soup' mixes, which are used to create new pieces, which we share in the blog hop reveal. I've participated twice - last winter and this past fall.

I've had such fun both times, I'll be quite sad if I don't make it in. But at the same time, I'd love for others to have a chance to play as well.

A Month and a Day

With a white button down
It's been a full month and a day since the Bead Soup reveal, when I promised that I'd post pictures of my completed piece as soon as it was.  Finished it up late last week.  And as of a few minutes ago, I have pictures!

I even made a set of earrings to match, to use more of Kim's wonderful beads, though I had a heck of a time trying to photograph them!

So here's one last cup of bead soup before the next one in January.  Entries for January will be run by lottery, so don't know if I'll be in it, but I can hope!

A Little Underdone

With a little clever photography, I could claim that my Bead Soup piece is complete, combining right angle weave 'links' with the lovely sea glass bezels and fused glass focal created by my fabulous swap partner  Kimberly Roberts.  I definitely finished enough to get a feel for the final piece.

But the truth of the matter is, it's not yet done.   Late arrivals of my soup mix due to hurricane Irene, unexpected time requirements in my other work and design challenges all left me really running behind on this one.  If it hadn't been for the need to follow through to show Kimberly's pieces, I might have thrown in the towel.

My orginal thought was a solid freeform peyote collar
The large, square, transparent glass focal was a real challenge for me.  The shape didn't lend itself to my more organic stitching, and I wrestled with the issue of transparency - do I bead behind it or do I let it stand alone?  I considered creating a solid freeform peyote collar, with beading behind to provide a backdrop for the focal, but it just didn't feel right.  Too heavy and solid for the focal bead.

Stitching the right angle weave closed around the wire
I finally decided to echo the open feel and shape of the focal with my right angle weave links.  Each link is stitched around a 20 gauge wire core to give it strength and stability.  I taped the ends with acid-free artists' tape and then painted the tape with a little acrylic to help it blend (the white tape would have shown through the bead work).

For each link I worked three rows of right angle weave the length of the circumference, like a long narrow ribbon.  And then I'd lace it closed around the wire, pinching it into shape as I went.

I'd originally thought I'd use the sea glass bezels in a separate piece, but when I laid them out amongst the links they looked right, so they were added in as well.  When the piece is complete, the links will graduate smaller around the neck.

So now check out the other Bead Soup participants' work:
